Everyone in town knows Greater Andover Days is the first weekend in October. Fewer people plan the days around it. That is the difference between a fall you attend and a fall you get to enjoy, because the interesting part of Andover this season is not the carnival itself. It is the two weeks bracketing it, when the newer restaurants on Andover Road are open and unhurried, the Redbud Trail is at its best walking temperature, and Central Park has a second life once the Ferris wheel packs up.
What is actually new since last fall
If you have not eaten on North Andover Road since the summer, one address has changed hands again. The old Rusted Rooster space, which briefly became Abode Bar & Bistro, opened in January as Uno Mas Cantina, a Mexican restaurant at 837 N Andover Road. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., closed Sunday. The layout kept its bones from the previous tenants, with a bar on the south end and casual dining on the north. If you tried the space under either prior name and wrote it off, the menu is different enough to warrant a second look.
That address matters because it sits between two of the busier newer spots on the same corridor. Point Nine is at 1539 N Andover Road and leans café-forward with a cleaner menu. Timbuktu at 1251 N Andover Road handles the burgers-and-a-pool-table shift. Add Sheets Creek and Victory Bar & Grill, and you have four distinct rooms inside a mile, which is unusual for a town Andover's size and worth knowing when out-of-town family visits.
The carnival, timed like a resident
The GAD carnival runs three sessions, and they are not equally crowded. Here is what the city has posted for 2026:

Wristbands are $33 per session for unlimited rides. Single tickets are $4.50 each, a ten-pack is $40, and thirty tickets go for $110. Every ride is one ticket per person with one exception: the Freak Out costs two tickets, or a wristband plus one additional ticket. If you have younger kids and want shorter lines, Sunday's four-hour block is your window. If you have older kids who want the full run, the Saturday evening wristband is the math that works.
A note on Central Park itself: the festival has candy counting contests, a car show, yoga, and concerts on the Capital Federal Amphitheater stage, with the Friday concert typically ticketed separately from festival admission. The 58th installment ran in 2025, so 2026 will be the 59th.
Where residents go when the park is packed
Central Park hosts the festival, but Central Park is also a 1.7-mile loop with an 18-hole disc golf course, a pond, a gazebo, and a playground. On non-festival weekends in October, that loop is one of the quietest places in town. The elevation gain across the whole loop is 22 feet, which is to say there is none, which is to say it is a stroller-and-coffee route rather than a workout.
If you want more distance without leaving Andover, the Redbud Trail's Andover section is six miles, running from 159th Street East at the Butler County line to Highway 54/400. The surface is mixed: 2.09 miles of concrete and roughly four miles of packed limestone. That composition matters if you are on a road bike or pushing a jogging stroller, because the limestone stretches change how you plan. The trail is a former rail line, which is why it stays flat and straight.
Fall in Andover is not the GAD weekend itself. It is the shoulder days on either side, when the town's better rooms and quieter trails are easiest to actually use.
The 13th Street Sports Park is the third option and the one most families default to on Saturday mornings. Five baseball diamonds, a pickleball court, a sand volleyball pit, a splash pad, and a Luckey Climber. When the youth soccer schedule is not stacked, the walking trails there are underused.
And the Dr. Jim Farha Andover YMCA at 1115 East US Highway 54 has been fully operational since it reopened in May 2024 after the April 2022 EF3 tornado. The rebuild added a signature Luckey Climber, an expanded gymnastics area, and the Farha Family Park indoor gathering space. Guest passes are $10 at the Welcome Desk if you are hosting family and want somewhere to send teenagers for two hours.
A dinner shortlist that is not the same four names
If you are cycling through the usual roster, here is the full working set worth knowing in town:
- Uno Mas Cantina, 837 N Andover Road. New in January 2026. Mexican, closed Sunday.
- Point Nine, 1539 N Andover Road. Café-modern, fresh ingredients.
- Poplar Restaurant, 127 US-54. Local staple.
- The Greens at Terradyne, 1400 Terradyne Street. Upscale casual, open to the public even if you are not a member of the golf course.
- Timbuktu, 1251 N Andover Road. Burgers, patio, pool table.
- Bob & Luigi's Pizzeria, 325 W Central Avenue. Pizza and pasta, kid-friendly.
- Victory Bar & Grill, 418 N Andover Road. Game-day room with pool tables and enough televisions to cover an early Big 12 slate.
- Chiang Mai Thai Andover. The town's Thai option, and the one most residents forget to mention when out-of-town family asks.
Four of those eight are on North Andover Road within a mile of each other. If you are the household that plans dinner by driving until someone in the back seat agrees, that stretch is your shortlist by geography alone.
One weekend, mapped
If you want a template for the shoulder weekend after the carnival wraps, here is one that uses the whole town without repeating a room:
- Saturday, 8 to 9:30 a.m. Coffee at Point Nine, then the 1.7-mile Central Park loop. Disc golf if you brought discs, pond if you did not.
- Saturday, mid-morning. Redbud Trail from the Highway 54/400 trailhead heading east. Turn around wherever the limestone starts feeling long, which for most people is around the two-mile mark.
- Saturday afternoon. 13th Street Sports Park if kids are along, or the Farha YMCA outdoor water park if it is still open for the season and the temperature has held.
- Saturday evening. Uno Mas Cantina if you have not been yet, or Victory Bar & Grill if college football scheduling requires it.
- Sunday morning. Bob & Luigi's is closed early, so it is a Poplar or Point Nine morning. Andover Public Library at 1511 E Central Avenue is open Saturday morning if the weather turns.
- Sunday afternoon. The Greens at Terradyne for a late lunch that feels like a small occasion without requiring one.
That is not a bucket list. It is a template you can rotate through three or four weekends before you exhaust it, which is the actual test of a place you live rather than visit.
The point of knowing all this
The reason to keep the sequence in your head is not that Andover is short on things to do. It is that the same four questions come up every fall: where to take out-of-town family, where to take a first-time visitor, where to send teenagers, and where to get a real dinner on a Wednesday. The answers change year to year because the roster changes year to year, and a resident who tracks it is a resident whose fall weekends feel different from the neighbors' fall weekends.
